Christina, what do we need to know about you?

My name is Christina Anagnostou and I am a multimedia artist based in London. Stretching from painting to moving image and 3D animation, video and installation, my art practice revolves around the playfulness of virtual identity, creating personas and cyborgs. These are translated through surrealism and post humanism, collaging different elements and bringing them in today’s world.
You can see more of my work on my website and get in touch through my IG profile.

You have recently been showcased in some of the biggest public screens in London, Tokyo and Seoul.

Indeed, last month I had the opportunity to showcase my latest project I am You, You are Me in Piccadilly Lights in London, Coex in Seoul and Yunika Vision in Japan through Circa x Dazed Class of 2021.
Circa x Dazed Class of 2021 is an initiative that aims to spotlight and support emerging artists working in moving image. 30 artists were selected to join CIRCA programme and respond to the theme of 'Communion' with a lucky finalist selected by Marina Abramović to receive the prize of £30.000 on the 14th of October.

How did it feel to see your work in Piccadilly Lights as a London resident?

Seeing my work on such a big scale in three different public spaces felt so surreal. Now I feel like anything smaller would be merely a sketch. I’ve always wanted to work on big scale projects, but never imagined something like this would happen so suddenly.
I feel grateful to be amongst all these exceptional artists and the works they created.  Some of my favourite films were Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley’s, Seulgi Lee Kang’s and Zongbo Jiang’s.

Tell us more About I am You, You are Me.

I am You, You are Me is a 2-minute artificial intelligence-generated video about the intersection between humanity and technology. Through an artificial intelligence algorithm (AI), I fed into the machine images of my friends and family that represent the intimate spiritual experiences I have with them, and let the machine create a blend of all these influences. Machines are said to be dismissive of emotions and feelings, but what happens when we stop viewing the machine as an empty transmitting vessel, and create an intimate relationship with it?

I am You, You are Me relates to the theme of communion through the creation of a community of people I have intimate relationships with. In the post-modern society, technology is now a potent tool that facilitates communication, and transmits a new sense of community creation and self expression. In this way a new aspect of communion is created, a dynamic exchange between humanity and technology transcending the bodily functions of emotion and spirituality.

Where do you get inspiration for your work?

Digested popular culture has been a prominent source of inspiration, from memes to pop culture icons, and cult classic films, I pastiche them all in one form. In short, I empty my mind on the table, and let the audience piece it back together..Some of my biggest inspirations are Ryan Trecartin, Lu Yang, Jacolby Satterwhite and Jon Rafman.

What are your aspirations in your career?

My aspirations for the future is to work on bigger scale 3D and immersive projects using VR techniques and hopefully build my own little world.
