Guangyu Zhang

Guangyu Zhang is a London-based painter whose work investigates abstraction as a space for emotional inquiry, where gesture, material presence and absence converge to articulate the complexities of lived experience. Working between painting and expanded painting practices, he develops compositions that balance instinct with restraint, transforming the canvas into a site of reflection, vulnerability and quiet tension.

Zhang is currently completing an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art, having previously earned a BFA in Drawing and Painting from OCAD University in Toronto. His practice has developed across China, Canada and the United Kingdom, establishing an international trajectory early in his career.

His work has been presented in solo exhibitions in China and selected group exhibitions across London's contemporary art scene, including The Koppel Project, Candid Gallery, LBF Contemporary, Safe House 1 and Chilli Gallery. His paintings are held in permanent institutional collections including the Ontario Court of Justice and Ridley College, alongside private collections internationally.
