Nelson Hernández

Nelson Hernández is a Chilean artist, born in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1991 and based in the United Kingdom. His practice is rooted in painting and continually expanded through a dialogue with digital tools, building a hybrid visual language in which the two ways of making inform one another. He works with the transformed body, with fragmented global cultures, and with the layered identity of the Latin American migrant, drawing on the vocabulary of surrealism not as homage but as a living instrument for reading the present.

Across his paintings the human figure is reassembled and estranged, at once intimate and uncanny, a mirror held to displacement, belonging and the making of new cultural selves. Moving deliberately away from traditional historiography, Hernández reactivates surrealist thought to engage the sensibilities of a globalised and dislocated world, where personal memory and collective experience are continually rewritten.
